Federal investigators are examining the deaths and disappearances of at least 11 scientists connected to U.S. aerospace and defense organizations since 2022, following a congressional inquiry into potential national security implications.
The House Oversight Committee requested briefings from federal agencies on Monday regarding the cases involving researchers with ties to NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. Committee Chairman James Comer said the pattern suggests “something sinister could be happening” and called it a potential national security concern.
Congressional Action
Rep. James Comer and Rep. Eric Burlison sent letters to multiple agency heads requesting staff-level briefings by April 27. “If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,” the letters stated.
Comer told reporters the deaths were unlikely to be coincidental. “Once you see the facts, it would suggest that something sinister could be happening and it would be a national security concern,” he said.
White House and FBI Response
The White House acknowledged the pattern on April 15 when press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration deemed it “worth looking into.” President Trump told reporters he expected answers within “the next week and a half,” describing the situation as “pretty serious stuff.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau is investigating potential connections to classified access and foreign actors. “If there’s any connections that lead to nefarious conduct or conspiracy, this FBI will make the appropriate arrest,” Patel told Fox News.
The FBI stated it “is spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists” while working with the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and state and local law enforcement.
NASA and Agency Coordination
NASA said it is “coordinating and cooperating with the relevant agencies in relation to the missing scientists.” The agency added that “nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat” at this time.
The Oversight Committee has focused partly on connections to NASA and nuclear research programs, though investigators are examining the broader commercial space and defense sectors where the individuals worked.
