A 21-year-old woman died after being released from a bungee jumping platform in Brazil without her safety rope properly secured, prompting a criminal investigation and renewed calls for stricter safety regulations.

The fatal accident occurred at the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, São Paulo state, during a recreational bungee jumping event organized by a private group. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell approximately 40 meters (131 feet) after authorities say she was pushed from the platform before essential safety equipment had been attached.

What Happened

Emergency responders arrived at the scene but could not save the victim. Medical personnel pronounced her dead from fatal injuries sustained in the fall.

According to investigators, the young woman was participating in the event when a catastrophic safety failure occurred. Witnesses and preliminary reports indicate she was released before her safety gear was secured.

The Investigation

Police detained six individuals believed to have organized or supervised the event. After questioning, three were released while three others remained in custody facing homicide-related charges.

Among those being held is a 32-year-old civil firefighter authorities describe as the alleged leader of the organizing group. Two additional suspects, aged 42 and 27, are also detained as investigators determine individual responsibilities.

Police reports indicate two of the suspects attempted to flee following the tragedy but were later located and arrested. Investigators are examining whether negligence or failure to follow safety procedures directly contributed to the death.

Safety Concerns Emerge

The case has generated intense public debate after reports emerged that safety concerns had previously been raised about the bridge. Local officials argued the area lacked sufficient oversight and that requests for stronger safety measures had not received adequate attention.

The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter regulations, inspections, and accountability for operators offering high-risk recreational activities. Prosecutors are expected to review evidence, witness statements, and operational procedures to determine the full extent of responsibility.
