A man armed with a shotgun and knives was apprehended at a Washington D.C. hotel during a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner after attempting to breach a security checkpoint.

The incident unfolded as the annual gala began at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening. Police say the suspect, identified as Cole Allen, charged toward a security checkpoint in an attempt to reach the presidential area inside the ballroom.

What Happened

Allen was tackled and pinned to the floor by Secret Service agents in the hotel lobby before reaching the main event space. Law enforcement recovered a shotgun and multiple knives from the suspect’s possession at the scene.

One Secret Service agent sustained a gunshot wound during the confrontation and received medical treatment. Interim DC Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that Allen “appeared to be a lone actor” with no indication of a broader public threat.

Authorities later confirmed Allen was a registered guest at the hotel. Investigators began searching his residence in California as part of the ongoing investigation into his motive.

The Response

President Trump commended the speed of the law enforcement response, saying agents acted “very quickly” in neutralizing the threat. He described the suspect as a “sick person” during remarks to press.

The President noted an unexpected sense of unity emerged among journalists and politicians during the evacuation. He indicated he had pushed to continue the dinner that evening but organizers ultimately decided to reschedule within 30 days.

Security Implications

The incident marks one of the most significant security breaches at a high-profile Washington political gathering in recent years. Officials announced an immediate review of safety protocols at the venue.

The Washington Hilton has hosted the Correspondents’ Association dinner for decades. The breach prompted questions about perimeter security and guest vetting procedures at major presidential events.
