Vance Says DOJ Is Investigating Ilhan Omar Amid Growing Scrutiny

Vice President J.D. Vance said Tuesday that the Department of Justice is actively reviewing Rep. Ilhan Omar, marking the strongest public indication yet that the Minnesota Democrat may be under federal scrutiny.

Vance made the comments during an exchange with a Daily Caller correspondent who asked about longstanding allegations involving Omar’s immigration history, marriage timeline and campaign finance matters. The vice president declined to provide specifics but suggested the matter warranted federal review.

“You read the things about Ilhan Omar, and about who she married, and whether she didn’t marry this person or that person,” Vance said. “It certainly seems like something fishy is there.”

What Vance Said

Vance appeared to directly confirm that the Justice Department is examining the matter. “So we’re going to investigate it, we’re going to take a look at it,” he said.

The vice president also stated that everyone deserves equal treatment under the law. “If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime,” Vance added, according to reporting by the Daily Caller.

Neither the Department of Justice nor Omar’s congressional office immediately responded to requests for comment following Vance’s remarks.

Years of Scrutiny

Controversies surrounding Omar have persisted for years, including allegations tied to campaign spending, tax matters, personal relationships and immigration questions. Conservative lawmakers and commentators have repeatedly raised questions about her marriage history and whether prior relationships involved immigration law concerns.

Republicans in Minnesota have also pressed questions about the Feeding Our Future fraud scandal, one of the largest COVID-era fraud cases in American history. GOP lawmakers attempted to connect Omar to individuals involved in that case, particularly through her support for pandemic-era food assistance expansions under the federal MEALS Act.

That effort failed after Democrats blocked the move in a tied committee vote. Republican lawmakers argued that pandemic waivers and loosened oversight created conditions allowing widespread abuse in child nutrition programs.

What Comes Next

If the Justice Department is actively reviewing Omar, it would represent a significant development involving one of the Democratic Party’s highest-profile progressive lawmakers. However, Vance did not outline specific allegations, identify the scope of any inquiry or provide evidence of criminal conduct.

Republicans are certain to cite the vice president’s comments in coming days. The political impact may develop faster than any potential legal proceedings.
