A gunman was stopped by law enforcement after attempting to breach security at a prominent Washington dinner attended by President Trump and other senior government officials.
The incident occurred shortly after the event began at a downtown hotel when a suspect approached the security screening area carrying multiple weapons. Hundreds of journalists, government officials and guests were inside the venue when the confrontation unfolded near the entrance.
What Happened
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, allegedly attempted to push through a security checkpoint while carrying a shotgun, handgun and knives, according to investigators. Law enforcement stopped Allen before he reached the main ballroom where Trump and other administration officials were present.
During the encounter, shots were fired and a Secret Service agent was struck by a bullet that hit his protective vest. The agent was treated at a hospital and survived the injury.
Allen was also injured during the confrontation and taken into custody. No deaths were reported in the attack.
