FBI Examines Fresh DNA Evidence In Nancy Guthrie Case

The FBI has received DNA evidence collected from the Tucson home of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, who disappeared on February 1.

Investigators recovered multiple DNA samples from the residence, including material from a hair sample, according to sources familiar with the investigation. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been collaborating with the FBI lab since the beginning of the case, sharing findings with partner laboratories across the country.

What the DNA Evidence Shows

A mixed DNA profile containing genetic material from three or more individuals has emerged from the investigation, according to experts analyzing the samples. At least one contributor to the DNA evidence is male, authorities have said.

Genetic genealogist CeCe Moore of Parabon NanoLabs noted that a hair sample would unlikely be part of a complex mixed profile once processed. “Not after it is cleaned for contamination,” Moore said. “They have that process in good shape, but it can take some time.”

One DNA sample was submitted to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System, which searches a national database. That search produced no match to any known offenders.

Other Forensic Evidence

Blood found on the front porch of Guthrie’s home was confirmed to belong to her. Investigators also examined a glove discovered approximately two miles from the residence, which resembled one worn by a masked individual visible on a Nest doorbell camera recording.

Testing of the glove through the FBI’s database produced no matches, and DNA extracted from it did not match samples collected from inside the home. Authorities have indicated the glove did not yield actionable leads.

The Investigation and Public Appeals

More than 11 weeks after Guthrie’s disappearance, the case remains unsolved. Officials stated it is unclear what additional information the available DNA evidence may yield as analysis continues.

The family is offering a total reward exceeding $1.2 million for information leading to her recovery, with the Guthrie family contributing $1 million. The FBI urges anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Savannah Guthrie told co-host Hoda Kotb during an appearance on the Today show that her family remains “in agony.” “Someone needs to do the right thing,” she said. “And she needs to come home now.”
