Leavitt Blasts Dems Who Refused To Back Iran ‘Terrorism’ Resolution

Author:

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized 53 House Democrats who voted against a resolution reaffirming that Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

The House voted 372 to 53 on Thursday to pass the resolution, introduced by Rep. Brian Mast of Florida. A similar measure in 2023 passed nearly unanimously, with only one opposing vote.

Leavitt said the Democratic opposition reflected political motivation rather than substance. “They are trying desperately to try to undermine President Trump’s essential action that he took to protect the United States of America,” she said on Fox News Channel’s “America Reports.”

The Resolution’s Contents

The resolution states that Iran “remains the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism and provides substantial financial and military support to groups including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.”

It cited Pentagon findings that “Iranian-backed proxy militias are responsible for the deaths of at least 603 U.S. service members in Iraq – roughly one in every six American combat fatalities.”

Senate War Powers Push

Separately, the Senate rejected a war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to wage military action against Iran. The measure failed 52-47, largely along party lines.

Democrats said they plan to introduce similar resolutions weekly to put lawmakers on record regarding their positions. Some Republicans indicated their stance could shift if the conflict extends beyond current timelines.

One Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman, voted against the Iran terrorism resolution, aligning with Republicans on the measure.
