Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years in Pennsylvania on Monday.
The 44-year-old submitted divorce documents to Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas, ending her marriage to Dr. Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon. Biden and Krein married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced by Ashley’s late brother Beau in 2010.
The couple kept their relationship largely private during their 13-year marriage, rarely discussing personal details publicly. Pennsylvania law seals divorce filings, keeping the specific reasons for the separation confidential and making court records unavailable to the public.
Public Life and Social Media Response
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley spoke about her wedding while introducing her father, saying, “At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception.”
On the day the filing became official, Ashley posted a photo on Instagram showing herself in a wooded setting with a thumbs-up gesture, set to Beyoncé’s song “Freedom.” She captioned the image, “New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”
