The FBI is investigating a pattern of deaths and disappearances among scientists connected to U.S. aerospace and defense programs following a congressional inquiry into potential national security threats.
At least 11 researchers tied to NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin have died or gone missing since 2022. The House Oversight Committee requested briefings from federal agencies this week, with a deadline of April 27 for responses.
Congressional Pressure Mounts
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer sent letters Monday to FBI Director Kash Patel and NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman demanding information about the cases. “If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,” the committee stated in its letters.
Comer, a Kentucky Republican, told reporters the pattern did not appear random. “Once you see the facts, it would suggest that something sinister could be happening and it would be a national security concern,” he said.
White House and Administration Response
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt formally acknowledged the pattern on April 15, saying the administration would examine the cases. “If true, of course, that’s definitely something I think this government and administration would deem worth looking into,” she said.
President Trump told reporters the same day he expected answers within “the next week and a half,” describing the matter as “pretty serious stuff.” Leavitt later confirmed the administration was “actively working with all relevant agencies and the FBI to holistically review all of the cases together.”
FBI Investigation Details
FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News on Sunday the bureau would examine potential connections to classified information access and foreign involvement. “If there’s any connections that lead to nefarious conduct or conspiracy, this FBI will make the appropriate arrest,” Patel said.
The FBI stated it is “spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists” while coordinating with the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and state and local law enforcement partners.
Scientific Fields Involved
Many deceased or missing individuals worked in specialized areas including asteroid tracking, deflection modeling, and space-based detection systems. These fields involve small communities of experts, according to analysts.
Blue Origin’s 2026 NEO Hunter concept, developed with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, represents one initiative in planetary defense involving ion-beam deflection and kinetic impact technologies.

NASA said it is cooperating with relevant agencies but noted that “nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat” at this time.
