A Virginia Republican Party election in Warren County has been overturned following allegations of voting irregularities and improper procedures at a February mass meeting.
The Warren County Republican Committee held its election and membership reset on February 12 at the Front Roland Volunteer Fire Department. Scott Lloyd, a former Trump administration official, filed an appeal challenging the results after losing the race for committee chairman to David Silek, a local attorney.
What Triggered the Challenge
Lloyd’s appeal packet included affidavits from attendees describing voting process irregularities. Witnesses reported that Democratic ballots were distributed unexpectedly during the voting period, according to accounts reviewed by the committee.
Multiple conservative voters claimed they were turned away from the meeting and prevented from casting ballots. Affidavits also detailed that the committee membership was reduced from 251 to 102 members without clear prior notification to excluded participants.
The meeting drew over 400 people, a record attendance for the committee. However, entry protocols agreed to by both candidates were not followed as the event progressed, according to accounts presented during the appeal hearing.
Key Procedural Issues Raised
Lloyd argued that a 7 p.m. registration cutoff was not advertised despite the meeting being promoted as running from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. He noted that individuals arriving after that time were denied entry without advance notice of the deadline.
The selection of membership applications also raised concerns. According to reports, approximately 180 applications were submitted, but only the top 102 were accepted for committee membership, though the selection criteria were disputed.
A county supervisor aligned with Silek was permitted to lead the WCRC’s rules committee despite sources claiming she should have been under a four-year ban from the Republican group due to her PAC’s endorsements of Democratic candidates.
The Appeal Process Ahead
About two dozen members of Virginia’s Sixth District Republican Committee gathered Tuesday night in Fisherville to hear Lloyd’s appeal. The overturning of the initial election result followed the hearing.
If Silek files a counter-appeal within 30 days, it will be reviewed by a special committee of five members from the state Republican Party, with none from the Sixth District. Lloyd and Silek will each select two members, with both parties jointly choosing the fifth.
