A Boeing 777 operated by Emirates Airlines crash-landed at Dubai International Airport on Wednesday, killing one firefighter and injuring 10 others during the emergency response.
Flight EK521, carrying 282 passengers and 18 crew members from India’s Thiruvananthapuram, touched down at 12:45 p.m. local time with its landing gear disabled. All passengers and crew evacuated safely within minutes after emergency exits were opened on the runway.
What Happened
The aircraft experienced a landing gear malfunction during its descent into Dubai, according to passenger Iype Vallikadan, who told the Associated Press that the pilot announced the emergency landing procedure. Smoke and flames were visible on the runway after impact, with social media images showing the plane engulfed in fire.
Airline chairman and CEO Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum confirmed the firefighter fatality and reported 10 hospitalizations among emergency responders. “Our primary concern at this moment is the safety and well-being of all passengers and cabin crew,” said Saif Mohamed Al Suwaidi, director general of Dubai’s General Civil Aviation Authority.
Investigators detected wind shear conditions at the airport during the descent, though uncertainty remains about its connection to the incident. Boeing’s technical team and the National Transportation Safety Board have mobilized to assist Dubai’s civil aviation authority with the investigation.

Dubai International Airport, the Middle East’s busiest hub, suspended operations following the crash-landing. Other flights experienced approximately six-hour delays, with normal operations resuming shortly before 7 p.m. local time.
The aircraft’s 282 passengers represented 18 different nationalities, including 226 from India, 24 from Britain, and six U.S. citizens. The remaining passengers came from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Ireland, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, and several other countries.
