President Donald Trump said Wednesday he has “no idea” how hospitalized Senate Republican Mitch McConnell is doing and hasn’t spoken with the Kentucky senator since his hospitalization weeks ago.
McConnell, 84, was found unconscious at his Washington home and required CPR, according to initial reports. His office has provided limited public updates, stating only that he is receiving “excellent care” and continues to improve while recovering in the hospital.
What We Know About McConnell’s Condition
McConnell’s staff said the senator “appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery” and is “working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters,” according to a statement last week. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said after the initial hospitalization that he had spoken with McConnell and that he “sounded good,” though details remain scarce.
The lack of transparency has prompted questions from fellow Republicans. “Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition,” Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said, contradicting speculation about what happened.
Calls for Public Transparency
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to McConnell on Wednesday requesting he “fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health.” Beshear wrote that “as public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent.”
“I believe this requires clear communication about one’s ability to serve,” Beshear added in the letter. The governor’s request reflects growing concern about McConnell’s capacity to continue representing Kentucky with his term ending in January.
Speculation and Social Media Claims
Conservative activist Laura Loomer claimed recently that sources told her McConnell is in a “vegetative state,” though no official confirmation of such claims has been made. The absence of detailed health updates has fueled online speculation about the extent of McConnell’s condition.
