Federal investigators are examining the deaths and disappearances of at least 11 scientists connected to U.S. aerospace and defense organizations since 2022, following a congressional inquiry into potential national security implications.
The House Oversight Committee requested briefings from federal agencies regarding cases involving researchers with ties to NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. Committee Chairman James Comer characterized the pattern as potentially representing a national security threat.
Congressional Inquiry Launched
Rep. James Comer and Rep. Eric Burlison sent letters to multiple agency heads requesting staff-level briefings by April 27. “If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,” the letters stated.
Comer told reporters the deaths were unlikely to be coincidental. “Once you see the facts, it would suggest that something sinister could be happening and it would be a national security concern,” he said.
Administration Response
The White House acknowledged the pattern when press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration deemed it “worth looking into.” President Trump told reporters he expected answers within “the next week and a half,” describing the situation as “pretty serious stuff.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau is investigating potential connections to classified access and foreign actors. “If there’s any connections that lead to nefarious conduct or conspiracy, this FBI will make the appropriate arrest,” Patel told Fox News.
Investigation Scope
The FBI stated it “is spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists” while working with the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and state and local law enforcement. NASA said it is “coordinating and cooperating with the relevant agencies in relation to the missing scientists.”
NASA added that “nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat” at this time. The Oversight Committee has focused on connections to NASA and nuclear research programs, though investigators are examining the broader commercial space and defense sectors.
Specialists in fields such as planetary defense and nuclear research represent a small, concentrated group of experts. Areas including asteroid tracking and space-based detection systems employ limited numbers of professionals with relevant expertise.
