Conservative commentator Laura Loomer sparked fresh debate about Senator Mitch McConnell’s health Tuesday by scrutinizing a photograph of his wife, Elaine Chao, leaving a rehabilitation facility where the Kentucky Republican is recovering.
McConnell’s office released its first detailed health update in over a month earlier this week, stating the 84-year-old remains hospitalized following a fall that caused him to lose consciousness. The senator was diagnosed with mild pneumonia but did not suffer a heart attack, stroke or broken bones, according to the statement.
What Sparked the New Speculation
Loomer shared a photograph showing Chao departing the rehabilitation center while wearing a surgical mask, sunglasses and a long navy trench coat. “This is more evidence that McConnell’s health is so poor they are making people around him mask up,” Loomer wrote on X.
Loomer questioned why Chao was not wearing a mask in a photograph McConnell’s office released Sunday. “Why wasn’t she wearing a mask in the photo McConnell’s staff released the other day? Just more evidence it was an AI photo or an older photo,” she wrote.
The Sunday Photo Controversy
The earlier photograph showing McConnell sitting upright in a hospital bed with Chao triggered immediate scrutiny from social media users who questioned the image’s authenticity. Some claimed the newspaper visible in the photo suggested it was taken years earlier or created using artificial intelligence.
The Washington Post reviewed the photograph and found no evidence it was generated using AI. The publication reported that the image’s metadata indicated it was taken Sunday.
Questions About the Latest Image
Social media users questioned why Chao wore a heavy trench coat despite Washington temperatures exceeding 100 degrees with the heat index. Others focused on her decision to wear a surgical mask, though no explanation has been provided.
Masks are commonly worn in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities due to facility policies, personal preference or to reduce the risk of transmitting respiratory illnesses to vulnerable patients.
McConnell’s Recovery Status
McConnell has not appeared publicly since June 14. His office stated he continues making “continued progress” and remains under doctors’ orders not to return to the Senate floor to vote yet.
“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time,” McConnell said in the statement. McConnell’s office and physicians have not indicated his condition differs from the information released in Sunday’s update.
