A federal judge in Massachusetts has ordered the Trump administration to restore exhibits removed from national parks and monuments, blocking further deletions while legal challenges proceed.

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley issued a preliminary injunction earlier this month following an executive order signed by President Trump directing federal agencies to remove what the administration characterized as partisan ideology from national monuments and museums. The order, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” instructed the Interior Department to eliminate displays that the administration said misrepresented American history.

What the Administration Did

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum directed the department to review and remove what he described as “improper partisan ideology” from exhibits across federal sites. The removals included displays at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia addressing George Washington’s enslaved laborers and signage at Fort Sumter National Monument in South Carolina discussing climate change impacts.

“Museums in our nation’s capital should be places where individuals go to learn – not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history,” the executive order stated. The administration said the changes aligned with its effort to focus on American greatness rather than what it called a “false reconstruction” of national history.

The Court Decision

Judge Kelley ruled that the administration must reverse the changes and submit weekly status reports to the court detailing restoration progress. The judge wrote that the removals set a “dangerous precedent of censorship and sanitization” that conflicted with the plaintiffs’ legal interests.

The Interior Department responded that it would review appeal options, calling Kelley a “liberal activist judge.” An agency spokesperson told Fox News Digital the department would continue evaluating its legal strategy while proceeding with planned America 250 celebration events.
