A Southern California Army veteran who owned a heavily decorated “Trump House” remains in critical condition after being brutally assaulted outside his home Wednesday afternoon.
Kerry Sheron, 69, was found with catastrophic injuries near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido after police responded to reports of an assault in progress around 2:15 p.m. He was transported to a trauma center where he remains in the ICU. Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, told reporters she does not expect her husband to survive.
The Arrest and Investigation
Police arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler at the scene and charged him with attempted murder. He is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County.
According to a friend of Butler’s, the suspect is a Navy veteran struggling with serious mental health issues. The friend told the California Post that Butler had been taking medication for mental illness but his condition deteriorated significantly in recent months.
The friend described Butler as increasingly paranoid and unstable, saying, “He sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him.” Butler had been unemployed since leaving the Navy, according to the source.
The Home and Possible Motives
Sheron’s home has become recognizable throughout the San Diego area for its extensive American flags, patriotic decorations and pro-Trump displays. Garcia suggested the visible political messaging may have provoked the attack, telling reporters, “They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is [a] veteran.”
California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa called for a swift investigation on X, claiming Trump supporters “are routinely the victims of leftist violence all across the country.” However, police have not publicly confirmed whether politics played a role in the alleged attack.
Investigators have not publicly declared a motive, though mental illness may be a significant factor based on accounts from those who knew Butler. The home has previously been targeted with vandalism and complaints due to its prominent political messaging.
The Witness
A utility worker who witnessed the assault helped restrain the suspect until police arrived and also suffered injuries during the intervention. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
