Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran and owner of an Escondido, California home famous for its patriotic and pro-Trump displays, died Sunday from injuries sustained during an alleged assault by a stranger.

Sheron was attacked outside his residence on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The home, known throughout the San Diego area as the “Trump House,” has been decorated with American flags and political displays for years.

What Happened

Escondido police responded to an assault report around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, near Sheron’s home. Officers found Sheron suffering significant injuries from the alleged attack.

According to law enforcement, 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler punched Sheron in the jaw once, causing him to collapse, before striking him multiple times in the head. A bystander who attempted to intervene was also injured during the incident.

Butler fled the scene but was located and arrested without incident. He is being held without bail at Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County.

The Charges and Investigation

Butler was initially charged with attempted murder, though the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said it is “reviewing the circumstances to determine whether charges will be amended,” according to police.

A friend told the California Post that Butler is a Navy veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder and mental health struggles. The acquaintance described Butler as increasingly paranoid, saying he “sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him.”

Police have not publicly declared an official motive for the attack. The District Attorney’s Office declined to comment on whether the crime is being investigated as politically motivated.

Family’s Account

Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, told CBS 8 that she did not expect her husband to survive the attack. “He tried to kill my husband,” Garcia said. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.”

Garcia suggested the visible patriotic displays on the home may have drawn hostility. “They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is a veteran,” she said.

The Property’s History

The Trump House has attracted both supporters and critics over the years due to its extensive American flags and political messaging. The property has previously been the target of vandalism and complaints, making it one of the most recognizable private homes in the San Diego area.

Sheron spent years maintaining the displays despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the residence.
