Rep. Andy Barr won Kentucky’s Republican primary Tuesday to advance toward replacing retiring Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, cementing his path to the Senate with a decisive victory.
Barr decisively outpaced his competitors in the GOP primary race, positioning himself as the likely general election winner in the Bluegrass State. His campaign gained significant momentum following a late endorsement from former President Donald Trump earlier this month.
The Primary Victory
Barr surpassed several candidates vying for McConnell’s seat, including former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who had sought to win without Trump’s backing. “We did have a lead before the endorsement,” Barr said during a campaign event on Monday. “Our lead has skyrocketed since then in the polling that we’re looking at, but we don’t take anything for granted.”
Cameron remained confident in his prospects despite finishing behind Barr. “I think people are tired of the games that are played in Washington and want somebody that’s looking out for their interests,” Cameron told WHAS11 before Election Day.
Trump’s Influence
Trump’s endorsement proved decisive in the Republican primary, reflecting the former president’s continued influence over GOP contests. Trump praised Barr as loyal and declared him “the only Candidate who will easily defeat the Democrat in what will be one of the most important Elections in American History.”
Trump highlighted Barr’s support for eliminating the Senate filibuster to advance the SAVE America Act, legislation that has faced unified Democratic opposition. “He will do everything in his power to get it done,” Trump said. “It is desperately needed by the Republican Party to pass the SAVE AMERICA ACT, and all other things necessary for a strong and brilliant Country.”
