Questions about former GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell’s health intensify following the death of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, raising fresh concerns about Republican control of the chamber.

McConnell, 84, was hospitalized after suffering cardiac arrest at his Washington, D.C., residence on June 14 and required CPR. His office has declined to disclose the nature of his medical condition or provide a timeline for his return to the Senate.

Calls for Transparency

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, publicly urged McConnell on Saturday to disclose details about his undisclosed medical condition. “I’m calling on Sen. McConnell to do the same and provide voters an update on his own health,” Beshear wrote on X, adding that the senator should “end the crazy speculation” and “just tell us what’s going on.”

Beshear had previously sent a letter to McConnell requesting a full health update. “As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent,” the governor wrote, stating that “clear communication about one’s ability to serve” was necessary.

Conflicting Accounts From GOP Leaders

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on June 15 that he had recently spoken with McConnell and that he “sounded good.” “He wants to be back, but I’ll defer to his staff on when,” Thune said.

However, Utah Sen. Mike Lee contradicted these assurances, stating that many members of Congress know nothing about McConnell’s actual condition. “Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition,” Lee posted on social media.

When asked about McConnell aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, President Donald Trump offered no insight. “I have no idea how he’s doing,” Trump responded.

Uncertainty Over Return

The lack of official updates has fueled widespread speculation about the extent of McConnell’s condition and whether he will be able to return to office. Emergency dispatch audio from June 14, obtained by multiple outlets, indicated McConnell was found unconscious at his home.

McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, remained in Beijing following his hospitalization, where she was meeting with Chinese officials. Her office stated his condition “did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.”
