Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is calling on former GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell to disclose details about an undisclosed medical condition that has kept the 84-year-old senator hospitalized, intensifying scrutiny over Republican control of the chamber.
McConnell was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C. residence on June 14 and required CPR, according to emergency dispatch audio obtained by multiple outlets. His office has declined to provide specifics about his medical condition or a timeline for his return to the Senate.
What Beshear Is Demanding
Beshear, a Democrat considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, sent a letter to McConnell requesting a full health update to Kentucky constituents. “As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent,” Beshear wrote. “I believe this requires clear communication about one’s ability to serve.”
On Saturday, Beshear intensified his push on social media, urging McConnell to “end the crazy speculation” and explain what is happening. He referenced his previous calls for transparency regarding former President Donald Trump’s health during the last administration.
The Information Vacuum
Senate Republican leadership has offered conflicting accounts of McConnell’s condition. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on June 15 that he had spoken with McConnell and that he “sounded good,” adding, “He wants to be back, but I’ll defer to his staff on when.”
However, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah stated that members of Congress lack information about McConnell’s status. “Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition,” Lee posted in response to speculation on social media.
When asked about McConnell’s condition aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, President Trump said, “I have no idea how he’s doing.”

The lack of transparency has raised questions about McConnell’s ability to return to office and whether his absence could affect Republican control of the Senate. McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, remained in Beijing following the hospitalization, with her office stating that his condition “did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.”
