Trump Orders Acting DNI to Clean House at Nation’s Intel Agencies

President Donald Trump has directed acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte to begin removing personnel from the nation’s 18 intelligence agencies and reduce the size of the intelligence bureaucracy ahead of a permanent appointee taking the role.

Pulte’s temporary position grants him authority over the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and agencies including the FBI and CIA. Trump views the acting status as beneficial rather than restrictive, giving Pulte what he described as more operational flexibility during the transition period.

“I think there are a lot of people in there that shouldn’t be there,” Trump told The Wall Street Journal. The president later told reporters he wants Pulte to “fire a lot of people” and reduce the overall size of the intelligence apparatus.

The Rationale Behind the Restructuring

Trump suggested that having Pulte execute major personnel and structural changes now would streamline the process for a future permanent intelligence chief. “He can do a lot of the hard work and we wouldn’t have to saddle somebody that goes in,” Trump said.

As acting DNI, Pulte oversees approximately $100 billion in annual spending and delivers classified intelligence briefings to the president. Trump also indicated he wants Pulte to review classified records related to the 2020 election and voter fraud allegations.

A businessman and social media personality before joining government, Pulte has become one of Trump’s closest administration officials. Supporters contend that his lack of traditional intelligence experience positions him as an outsider capable of challenging entrenched bureaucratic structures.

Opposition and Concerns

Critics have expressed concerns about placing someone without intelligence background in charge of agencies central to national security. Democrats have questioned whether a temporary appointee should hold such expansive authority over organizations responsible for analyzing global threats.

The move reflects Trump’s broader administration effort to pursue federal workforce reductions and agency reorganizations across multiple departments. The restructuring represents one of the most ambitious bureaucracy reform attempts in recent American history.
