President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran could reach an agreement within a week to extend a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump acknowledged a “glitch” had emerged in negotiations but said he helped resolve it quickly. The president indicated that Iran had objected to Israeli military operations involving Lebanon, prompting his intervention.

Trump’s Diplomatic Intervention

“So, I spoke with Hezbollah, and I said no shooting, and I talked to Bibi [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu], and said, no shooting, and they both stopped shooting each other,” Trump said.

Trump used social media to claim he personally prevented a broader conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. He said he secured assurances from Netanyahu that Israel would not deploy troops into Beirut and that Hezbollah agreed to halt attacks on Israel through intermediary discussions.

“A peace agreement with Iran could be even better than a military victory,” Trump said, while cautioning that reaching a final deal remained difficult given decades of tension between Washington and Tehran.

Remaining Obstacles

Trump acknowledged that negotiations were not yet complete, saying, “I still have to get a few more points.” However, he signaled discussions had not collapsed by posting on social media that talks were continuing at a “rapid pace.”

Earlier Monday, reports that Iran had stopped communications raised concerns negotiations could be unraveling. The developments occurred amid broader efforts to transform the current ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement, according to ABC News.
