A 69-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after being attacked near his heavily decorated home in Escondido, California, with a suspect now facing attempted murder charges.

Escondido police responded at 2:15 p.m. to reports of an assault in progress near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Officers found the victim suffering severe injuries and arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler at the scene.

What Happened

A utility worker who witnessed the attack intervened and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived, authorities said. The victim was transported to a trauma center where he remained in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Butler fled the scene but was quickly apprehended and arrested. He is being held without bail at Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County on attempted murder charges.

The bystander who intervened also sustained injuries during the confrontation, according to police.

The Home and Circumstances

The victim’s home is known throughout the San Diego area for extensive patriotic decorations and pro-Trump displays, including numerous American flags and political signage. The property has attracted both supporters and critics for years.

The victim’s wife told reporters she does not expect her husband to survive. “He tried to kill my husband,” Maria Garcia said, suggesting the visible political displays may have contributed to the attack.

Garcia, a veteran’s spouse, expressed confusion about potential motivations. “I support America. My husband is a veteran,” she told CBS 8.

The Suspect and Investigation

A person acquainted with Butler told the California Post that the suspect is a Navy veteran struggling with serious mental health issues. According to this source, Butler had been unemployed since leaving the Navy and had experienced worsening conditions despite medication.

“He sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him,” the acquaintance reportedly said, describing Butler as increasingly paranoid and unstable.

Police have not publicly confirmed a motive for the attack. Investigators have not released additional details about circumstances leading to the confrontation.

Political Response

California Republican Representative Darrell Issa called for a “full and immediate investigation” on social media platform X. Issa claimed Trump supporters are “routinely the victims of leftist violence all across the country,” though authorities have not confirmed politics as a motive.

Mental illness may be a significant factor based on accounts from those familiar with the suspect, authorities indicated.
