Iran’s chief negotiator warned Sunday that Tehran will not accept any agreement with the United States unless it fully safeguards Iranian interests, as President Donald Trump submitted a revised and stricter proposal to negotiators.

The statement from Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf highlights deepening divisions between the two nations on critical issues including Iran’s nuclear capabilities and control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping corridor. Both sides continue exchanging draft texts and proposed amendments, with negotiations facing significant delays.

Stalled Negotiations

Iranian officials have disputed several of Trump’s public statements and clarified that no final agreement has been reached. The revised proposal marks an escalation in demands that could push talks further from resolution.

Tehran has made additional demands, including the release of approximately $12 billion in frozen assets before moving forward with substantive nuclear discussions. Iranian lawmakers are also weighing measures to increase Iran’s authority over maritime navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Regional Tensions Persist

Despite a temporary ceasefire implemented earlier in the year, sporadic clashes continue across the region. Fighting has intensified in Lebanon following Israel’s expanded military operations against Hezbollah, prompting Lebanese officials to call for an immediate and sustained ceasefire.
