NASCAR icon Greg Biffle, his family, and three others died when their private jet crashed near Statesville, North Carolina, shortly after takeoff.

The Cessna C550 experienced mechanical difficulties during its departure and began losing altitude as the pilot attempted to return to the airport. The aircraft struck an open field adjacent to the runway and immediately caught fire, according to authorities at the scene.

What Happened

Biffle, 55, was traveling with his wife Heather and their two children when the jet went down on Tuesday morning. Three additional passengers were also aboard the aircraft.
