A devastating mudslide near Lillooet has resulted in multiple fatalities and left one person still missing after an intensive multi-day search, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The disaster occurred along Highway 99 (Duffey Lake Road), where severe flooding and extreme rainfall triggered a massive slide that buried sections of the roadway. The storm system caused widespread destruction across southern British Columbia, prompting emergency responses and road closures throughout the region.

Authorities confirmed that the bodies of three men were recovered over two days, following the earlier discovery of a woman’s body at the site. The woman was identified as the first confirmed fatality linked to the extreme weather event. Despite continued efforts, one man remains unaccounted for, and officials have acknowledged that all active search operations have now concluded due to dangerous conditions.

Lisa Lapointe stated that one victim was recovered midweek, with two more found the following day. She emphasized that the process of identifying the victims is ongoing and must be handled carefully before notifying their families. The unstable terrain, deep debris, and worsening weather made search and recovery efforts increasingly hazardous.

Earlier reports indicate that four individuals in total were initially listed as missing in connection with the mudslide. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to locate them, but efforts were severely hindered by unsafe ground conditions and the risk of further landslides. Janelle Shoihet confirmed that these risks ultimately forced officials to halt the search to protect responders.

Lapointe expressed heartfelt condolences to the families affected, acknowledging the profound grief caused by the sudden loss of loved ones. She also noted that communities across British Columbia have faced a particularly difficult year, marked by repeated natural disasters and ongoing recovery challenges.

The BC Coroners Service will continue investigating the circumstances of the deaths and may issue recommendations to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Meanwhile, the affected portion of Highway 99 remains closed indefinitely, as officials warn of continued instability and potential additional slides. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and remain cautious.
