A 31-year-old California man was arrested after attempting to force his way through security at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, prompting an immediate evacuation and cancellation of the event.
The incident occurred approximately 20 minutes after President Trump and the first lady arrived at the annual gathering, commonly referred to as the “Nerd Prom.” Federal authorities say Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, rushed a secured checkpoint while carrying a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives.
What Happened
Allen, identified as a teacher, video game developer, and Caltech graduate, attempted to advance toward the main ballroom before U.S. Secret Service agents confronted him in the hotel lobby. A struggle ensued, and gunfire was discharged during the confrontation.
One Secret Service agent was struck at close range but was protected by ballistic body armor, according to officials. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and remained in stable condition, while Allen sustained minor injuries before being taken into federal custody.
Security teams immediately ordered a full evacuation of the venue and conducted a sweep of the hotel to verify no additional threats remained present.
The Response
The White House Correspondents’ Association canceled the remainder of the evening’s program, citing ongoing security concerns. Organizers said the dinner would be rescheduled with enhanced security measures in place.
President Trump commended the Secret Service’s response, stating that the agency’s actions prevented a potentially far worse outcome. “The swift response by our brave agents was critical,” the president said in a statement.
The Investigation
Federal investigators have begun an extensive examination of Allen’s background, recent activities, and possible motivations. Authorities are searching his California residence and reviewing communications reportedly sent to family members before the attack.
Officials currently believe Allen acted alone and have found no evidence of a larger conspiracy or ongoing threat to public safety. The incident has prompted discussions about security protocols at major political events in Washington.
