A 31-year-old California man was arrested after attempting to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, forcing authorities to evacuate the venue and cancel the event.

The incident occurred approximately 20 minutes after the president and first lady arrived at the annual gathering, commonly referred to as the “Nerd Prom.” Federal authorities said the suspect rushed a secured checkpoint while carrying multiple weapons.

The Incident

Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, a teacher and video game developer who graduated from the California Institute of Technology, attempted to force his way through security and advance toward the main ballroom, according to law enforcement officials. Allen was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he rushed the security perimeter.

Secret Service agents intercepted Allen inside the hotel lobby before he reached the crowded ballroom. A violent struggle ensued, during which gunfire was discharged.

One Secret Service agent was struck at close range but sustained non-fatal injuries protected by ballistic body armor, officials said. The agent was transported to a nearby hospital and remained in stable condition.

Response and Investigation

Security teams immediately ordered a full evacuation of the venue as heavily armed officers swept the hotel to ensure no additional threats existed. The White House Correspondents’ Association ultimately canceled the evening’s program, citing ongoing security concerns.

President Trump praised the Secret Service’s response, crediting the agency with preventing what could have been a far more serious tragedy. “The swift actions of our law enforcement prevented a potential catastrophe,” the president said in a statement.

Federal investigators launched an extensive investigation into Allen’s background and possible motives. Authorities searched his California residence and reviewed writings he allegedly sent to family members shortly before the incident.

Officials currently believe Allen acted alone with no evidence of a broader plot or continuing threat, according to federal law enforcement sources. The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of security procedures at major political events in Washington.
