As Bad As Obama’s Library Design Is, The Merch He’s Selling There Is Worse…

The Obama Presidential Center, set to open next month in Chicago, is facing renewed scrutiny over its merchandise offerings, particularly a $30 pin that has drawn comparisons to everyday objects online.

The presidential center has been in development for over a decade and faced multiple design controversies. Construction costs have increased from an initial $500 million estimate to $850 million, with the building’s exterior architecture generating significant debate since its unveiling.

The Design Vision

Architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams designed the structure to symbolize four hands joining together in unity. The building features text from former President Barack Obama’s speeches displayed on its exterior, though readability has been questioned.

Williams revealed that Obama played an active role throughout the design process, pushing the architects toward bolder choices. “He drew on one of my drawings, made a strong mark, which indicated that he didn’t think I was being bold enough,” Williams said, adding that the former president “didn’t let it rest.”

The Merchandise Backlash

The presidential center’s official merchandise has attracted criticism online, particularly a gray pin priced at $30. The website describes it as representing “the intersection of bold design and global leadership,” with proceeds benefiting the Obama Foundation.

Social media users have compared the pin to chewing gum, erasers and pregnancy tests. “It looks like chewed gum or an eraser that a third grader has been mutilating,” one user wrote on X, while others questioned how the merchandise could be less appealing than the building itself.

What’s Next

The center is scheduled to open to the public next month in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side. The project has faced local protests and ongoing design criticism since its announcement.
