President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were rushed off stage at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night after gunshots were fired at the event.

Multiple Cabinet members in attendance, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, were also evacuated. The Secret Service removed Trump from the stage as authorities detained the shooter at the scene.

What Happened

Gunshots rang out during the annual dinner held at the Hilton hotel in the nation’s capital. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was near the restrooms when the shooting occurred, told the network he was positioned a few feet away from the gunman. “I did see the gunman on the ground after he started shooting,” Blitzer said.

The White House press pool reported that Trump remained at the Hilton as of 8:56 p.m., indicating the president had not yet departed the venue following the incident.

Safety Confirmed

A source told CNN that Trump is safe following the evacuation. An administration official confirmed that Cabinet members who were present are also unharmed.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “is fine and has left the dinner,” according to his aide Stefanie Spear. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung and FBI Director Kash Patel were among the senior officials evacuated.

Official Response

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace released a statement saying, “Right now, we are praying for the safety of President Trump and the members of the administration attending the White House Correspondents Association Dinner after gunshots were fired.” Mace added that reports indicated the shooter had been detained and that Trump would be returning to dinner.
