A 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran who owned a prominently decorated “Trump House” in Escondido, California, died following an alleged beating outside his home on Wednesday afternoon.
Kerry Sheron was found with severe injuries near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street around 2:15 p.m. after police responded to an assault report. A bystander who tried to intervene during the incident was also injured.
What Happened
Authorities arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler and charged him with attempted murder in connection with the attack. Butler, held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County, allegedly fled the scene before being apprehended shortly after.
Law enforcement said the assault involved repeated strikes to Sheron’s head and jaw. Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, told CBS 8 that medical personnel warned the family about his condition. “He tried to kill my husband,” Garcia said.
The Property’s Political Profile
Sheron had decorated his Escondido residence for years with American flags, patriotic symbols, and pro-Trump displays, making it one of the region’s most recognizable private homes. The property has attracted both supporters and critics throughout the years.
Garcia suggested the visible political displays may have contributed to the attack. “They don’t like the flags,” she told the outlet. “I support America. My husband is a veteran.”
The Suspect’s Background
Butler is a Navy veteran who has struggled with serious mental health issues, according to a person familiar with him. The acquaintance told the California Post that Butler had been medicated for mental illness but his condition deteriorated significantly.
The source described Butler as increasingly paranoid and noted he had been unemployed since leaving the Navy. Law enforcement has not officially declared a motive for the attack.
