Trump Signs Stopgap Spending Bill to End Partial Government Shutdown,,,

Author:

President Donald Trump signed a $1.2 trillion spending package late Tuesday, officially ending the weeklong partial government shutdown and restoring funding to most federal agencies. The bill passed the House narrowly (217–214), relying on crucial Democratic support after 21 conservative Republicans voted against the measure. Dissidents, including Thomas Massie, opposed the measure because it failed to deliver long-term border security measures and neglected GOP priorities like the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

While the legislation funds major departments through September, the critical Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is only funded until February 13, setting up a sharp deadline for lawmakers. This 10-day window forces Congress to immediately confront contentious debates over immigration enforcement. Democrats are demanding increased accountability, including the use of judicial warrants for ICE arrests and mandatory body cameras—reforms Secretary Kristi Noem has partially begun implementing. The ongoing political clash centers on border control versus law enforcement oversight.
