A Southern California Army veteran who owns a heavily decorated home known as the “Trump House” remains in critical condition after being brutally assaulted outside his residence Wednesday afternoon.

Kerry Sheron, 69, was found with catastrophic injuries near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido after police responded to reports of an assault around 2:15 p.m. He was transported to a trauma center where he remains in the intensive care unit.

Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, told reporters she does not expect her husband to survive. “He tried to kill my husband, you know,” Garcia said to CBS 8. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.”

Arrest and Investigation

Police arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler at the scene and charged him with attempted murder. He is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County.

According to a friend of Butler’s, the suspect is a Navy veteran who has been struggling with serious mental health issues. “This is the guy that plays with Legos and Star Wars stuff,” the friend told the California Post.

The friend said Butler had been taking medication for mental illness but his condition deteriorated significantly in recent months. “He sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him,” the friend said, adding that Butler had been unemployed since leaving the Navy.

The Property and Potential Motive

Sheron’s home has become recognizable throughout the San Diego area for its extensive American flags, patriotic decorations and pro-Trump displays. Garcia suggested the visible political messaging may have provoked the attack.

“They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is [a] veteran,” Garcia said. The home has previously been targeted with vandalism and complaints due to its prominent political displays.

California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa called for a swift investigation on X, claiming Trump supporters “are routinely the victims of leftist violence all across the country.” Police have not publicly confirmed whether politics played a role in the alleged attack.

Details Remain Limited

A utility worker who witnessed the assault helped restrain the suspect until police arrived and also suffered injuries during the intervention. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

Investigators have not publicly declared a motive, though mental illness may be a significant factor based on accounts from those who knew Butler.
