Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is demanding former GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell publicly disclose details about his medical condition after the senator was hospitalized in June.

The 84-year-old McConnell was found unconscious at his Washington residence on June 14 and required CPR, according to emergency dispatch audio obtained by multiple outlets. His office has provided no significant update on his condition since his hospitalization, fueling public speculation about his ability to serve and Republican control of the Senate.

Demands for Transparency

Beshear, a Democrat, intensified calls for McConnell to address his health status on Saturday. “I’m calling on Sen. McConnell to do the same and provide voters an update on his own health,” Beshear wrote on social media, urging the senator to “end the crazy speculation” and “just tell us what’s going on.”

The governor had previously sent McConnell a letter requesting he “fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health.” Beshear emphasized that public officials have a duty to be transparent about their ability to serve.

Limited Information From GOP Leadership

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he recently spoke with McConnell and that he “sounded good,” adding that McConnell “wants to be back.” However, other Republican senators acknowledge they have limited knowledge of his condition.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah stated that “many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition.” President Donald Trump declined to comment when asked about McConnell’s status, saying, “I have no idea how he’s doing.”

Ongoing Uncertainty

McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, remained in Beijing following his hospitalization, with her office saying his condition “did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.” McConnell’s office has repeatedly declined to provide details about his medical condition or a timeline for his return to Senate duties.
