A 69-year-old San Diego homeowner whose residence is covered in pro-Trump and patriotic decorations was severely beaten Wednesday, leaving him in critical condition.

Police responded to an assault in progress near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street on Wednesday afternoon. Officers arrived to find the victim suffering severe injuries, and a utility worker who witnessed the attack helped restrain the suspect until authorities arrived on scene.

What Happened

The victim’s wife, Maria Garcia, told CBS 8 that her husband’s prognosis is dire. “He tried to kill my husband, you know,” Garcia said. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.”

The suspect, identified as Butler, fled the scene but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody. He is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County.

A friend of Butler told the California Post that the suspect is a Navy veteran who has been struggling with serious mental health issues. The friend described Butler as increasingly paranoid in recent months.

The home, known throughout San Diego as the “Trump House,” has been decorated for years with American flags, patriotic symbols, and pro-Trump displays. Garcia suggested the visible political messaging may have motivated the attack.

The residence has previously been the target of vandalism and complaints from neighbors due to its highly visible political decorations. Police have not publicly declared a motive for the assault.

Official Response

California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa called for action on social media, writing “Full and immediate investigation.” Issa stated that President Trump’s supporters are “routinely the victims of leftist violence all across the country.”

Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether politics played a role in the alleged attempted killing. The utility worker’s intervention may have prevented a more severe outcome, though the victim remains in critical condition.
