A Republican senator called for more transparency about Mitch McConnell’s health as the Kentucky GOP leader continues his recovery from a fall that left him hospitalized last month.
McConnell, 84, has been absent from the Senate since suffering a fall in early June that briefly rendered him unconscious. His office released a detailed health update this week stating he remains in a rehabilitation facility recovering from the incident and a subsequent mild case of pneumonia.
What Senators Are Saying
Alabama GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville told Fox News Digital that Republican leadership has provided no updates to colleagues about when McConnell might return or specifics about his condition. “Somebody needs to come out,” Tuberville said, noting that senators received no information during a Tuesday lunch meeting.
Louisiana GOP Sen. John Kennedy defended McConnell against speculation about his health, dismissing rumors circulating online as unfounded. “I believe Mitch,” Kennedy said. “I don’t believe all these stories that he’s brain dead and all of that.”
Kennedy acknowledged McConnell’s age as a factor in recovery, saying “Mitch is not 29 anymore” and that the senator would return when able.
Fresh Questions Emerge
Conservative commentator Laura Loomer sparked new speculation Tuesday by sharing a photograph of McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, leaving the rehabilitation facility while wearing a surgical mask and sunglasses. Loomer suggested the precautions indicated McConnell’s condition may be more serious than disclosed.
Loomer also questioned the authenticity of a photograph released by McConnell’s office Sunday showing him sitting upright in a hospital bed alongside Chao, noting the discrepancy in whether Chao wore a mask in each image.
The Official Account
McConnell’s office stated the senator did not suffer a heart attack or stroke and sustained no broken bones from the fall. The statement attributed his extended recovery partly to a childhood battle with polio, which McConnell said contributed to his fall.
McConnell has not appeared publicly since June 14 and remains hospitalized as he recovers.
