The FBI is investigating a pattern of deaths and disappearances among scientists with ties to U.S. aerospace and defense programs, following a congressional inquiry that has raised national security concerns.
At least 11 researchers connected to NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin have died or gone missing since 2022, prompting the House Oversight Committee to request briefings from federal agencies. The committee, led by Chairman James Comer, sent letters Monday to officials including FBI Director Kash Patel and NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman demanding information by April 27.
Congressional Action
“If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,” the committee’s letters stated. Comer, a Kentucky Republican, told reporters he did not view the pattern as coincidental.
“Once you see the facts, it would suggest that something sinister could be happening and it would be a national security concern,” Comer said. He indicated the committee was prioritizing the investigation as a potential threat to national security.
White House Response
The White House formally acknowledged the pattern on April 15, when press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration would examine the cases. “If true, of course, that’s definitely something I think this government and administration would deem worth looking into,” she responded to a direct question.
President Trump told reporters the same day that he expected answers within “the next week and a half,” calling the matter “pretty serious stuff.” In a subsequent post on X, Leavitt confirmed the administration was “actively working with all relevant agencies and the FBI to holistically review all of the cases together.”
FBI Investigation Details
FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News on Sunday the bureau would examine potential connections to classified information access and foreign involvement. “If there’s any connections that lead to nefarious conduct or conspiracy, this FBI will make the appropriate arrest,” Patel said.
The FBI stated it is “spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists” while coordinating with the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and state and local law enforcement partners. NASA said it is cooperating with relevant agencies but noted that “nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat” at this time.
The Science Connection
Experts note that fields such as planetary defense and nuclear research involve small communities of specialists. Many deceased or missing individuals worked in areas including asteroid tracking, deflection modeling, and space-based detection systems.
Blue Origin’s 2026 NEO Hunter concept, developed with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, represents one initiative in this sector. The spacecraft platform includes ion-beam deflection and kinetic impact technologies with potential applications across the defense and space industries.
