A 69-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after being attacked near his heavily decorated home in Escondido, California, with authorities charging a 32-year-old suspect with attempted murder.

Escondido police responded Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. to reports of an assault in progress near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Officers found the victim suffering severe injuries and transported him to a trauma center where he remained in intensive care.

A utility worker who witnessed the attack intervened and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived, authorities said. The bystander sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Arrest and Charges

Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was arrested at the scene and is being held without bail at Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County on attempted murder charges. Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive for the attack.

A person acquainted with Butler told the California Post that the suspect is a Navy veteran struggling with serious mental health issues. According to this source, Butler had been unemployed since leaving the Navy and had experienced worsening conditions despite medication.
