Leavitt Sets Media Straight With Fact-Check On Joe Biden

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended changes to media pool access, stating the adjustments expand transparency rather than restrict it.

Leavitt spoke at an Axios event hosted by co-founder Mike Allen about the Trump administration’s modifications to press credentialing and pool positioning. The discussion centered on whether limiting certain outlets’ access represents a shift in White House media transparency practices.

What Leavitt Said

Leavitt argued that thousands of outlets hold White House press credentials and hundreds cover the beat daily. “Why should a single outlet have the privilege of being in that 13 person press pool every single day,” she said, referring to changes affecting wire service positioning.

“The changes we’ve made have actually created more transparency, more accessibility, and greater access for a broad variety of outlets and a diversity of journalists,” Leavitt added.

She stated the administration continues to grant access to multiple news organizations, including those critical of the president. “If we were trying to create positive press for the president, if we were trying to make it easier on him or on the administration, we wouldn’t allow some of these outlets in,” she said.

The Press Freedom Question

Allen raised concerns from the White House Correspondents Association, which stated government should not control independent media coverage. Leavitt responded by asserting that a small group of journalists should not dictate which outlets access the Oval Office.

“There should be equal access for all outlets,” Leavitt said, characterizing the changes as recognition of the digital media landscape rather than ideological positioning.

Biden’s Media Record

The exchange referenced a July Axios report documenting former President Joe Biden’s limited media engagement compared to recent predecessors. At the same point in their terms, Biden had conducted 164 press conferences and interviews versus Trump’s 468.

George W. Bush recorded 248 and Ronald Reagan 262 at equivalent points in their presidencies, making Biden’s figure the lowest among the last seven presidents examined.
