The federal government is implementing automatic military draft registration for all men ages 18 to 25 starting in December, a change that would not affect former President Donald Trump’s youngest son due to his age.

The new directive will automatically enroll men in the draft when they apply for a driver’s license or state identification card, replacing the current system requiring self-registration within 30 days of turning 18. This creates uniform standards across all states and territories.

Barron Trump, who is currently under 18, falls outside the registration requirement timeframe. Even when he reaches the required age, the automatic enrollment process will handle his registration without requiring individual action.

How the New System Works

Men who fail to register by age 26 face significant penalties under current law, including fines up to $250,000, potential prison sentences of five years, and loss of federal student loan eligibility and government employment opportunities. Immigrants who do not register may be denied citizenship status.

Many states have already adopted automatic registration systems independently. The federal rule standardizes this approach nationwide and streamlines the enrollment process.

Draft Selection Process

If conscription were reinstated, individuals turning 20 that year would be called first through a lottery system, followed by those ages 21 through 25. Younger age groups would only be included if additional personnel were required.

Selected individuals would undergo mandatory medical and psychological evaluations to determine fitness for service. Certain health conditions qualify individuals for exemptions, and students may receive temporary deferrals.
