Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years in Pennsylvania.
The 44-year-old submitted divorce documents to Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas on Monday, ending her marriage to Dr. Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon. Biden and Krein wed in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced by Ashley’s late brother Beau in 2010.
Pennsylvania law seals divorce filings, keeping the reasons for the separation confidential. The couple kept their family life largely out of the public eye during their marriage.
Public Appearances and Recent Posts
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley spoke about her wedding while introducing her father to the audience. “At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she said.
On the day the filing became official, Ashley posted a photo on Instagram showing herself in a wooded setting with a thumbs-up gesture, set to Beyoncé’s song “Freedom.” She captioned the image with a message about change and boundaries.
“New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” she wrote.
What This Means
The divorce marks the end of a 13-year union between the two. Court records in Pennsylvania remain sealed, meaning additional details about the separation are unlikely to become public.
