Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years in Pennsylvania on Monday.

The 44-year-old submitted paperwork to Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas seeking to end her marriage to Dr. Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon. Divorce records in Pennsylvania are sealed, keeping the reasons for the separation private.

Biden and Krein married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after meeting through her late brother Beau roughly two years prior. The couple kept their family life largely out of the public eye during their time together.

Reflecting on the Marriage

During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley shared memories of her wedding day while introducing her father to delegates. “At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she said, describing Joe Biden’s hands-on involvement in the celebration.

The filing came on the same day Ashley posted to Instagram showing herself in a wooded setting with a thumbs-up gesture. The post featured Beyoncé’s “Freedom” as background music.

Moving Forward

Ashley accompanied the social media photo with a message about transformation and establishing new boundaries. “New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” she wrote, signaling a shift in her personal circumstances.
