California Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley announced she will not seek re-election after seven terms representing a Ventura County district.

Brownley’s decision adds to a growing exodus from Congress, with more than three dozen House members already announcing they will not run for another term. She becomes the second California House Democrat this cycle to announce plans to leave office.

What Brownley Said

“Serving our community and our country has been the honor of my lifetime,” Brownley said in a statement, highlighting her decades of work in public service.

The congresswoman reflected on her tenure, noting that her office has “helped thousands of constituents navigate the federal government, returned millions in earned benefits.”

Brownley remained optimistic about the Democratic Party’s future, expressing confidence in House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “I am particularly pleased that I will leave the House with Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker,” she said.

Leadership Response

Jeffries released a statement praising Brownley’s work on veterans’ issues and military family support, noting her leadership on the Female Veterans Suicide Prevention Act and the Deborah Sampson Act.

“Rep. Brownley will be missed by the House Democratic Caucus and we wish her and her family the very best in this new chapter,” Jeffries said.
