Israeli forces carried out a large-scale aerial assault across Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, killing at least 254 people and injuring hundreds, according to Lebanese officials. The strikes targeted more than 100 locations within minutes and occurred shortly after the United States and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire. Israeli officials clarified that the ceasefire applied only to U.S.-Iran operations and did not include Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Airstrikes hit densely populated areas, including neighborhoods near schools, commercial zones, and the country’s only international airport. Rescue teams worked overnight to search for survivors, and authorities warned the death toll could rise. Hospitals were overwhelmed, calling for urgent blood donations and additional medical staff. Smoke and destruction were reported across Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and southern cities such as Tyre.
Israel stated that the attacks targeted Hezbollah positions and were intended to prevent further rocket and drone attacks on Israeli territory. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz described the operation as a series of “surprise attacks.” Hezbollah had previously launched rockets into Israel following escalating regional tensions.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the strikes, saying they hit civilian areas and caused significant casualties. He urged international allies, including the United States and European nations, to intervene and help stop the attacks. Witnesses described panic and destruction, with civilians fleeing collapsing buildings.
The broader conflict has displaced more than one million people in Lebanon, with over 1,700 reported dead, including many children. Israel has also imposed evacuation zones in southern Lebanon, raising concerns about a prolonged military presence.
Confusion surrounding the ceasefire’s scope added to tensions, as Iranian officials believed it included Lebanon. U.S. leaders later clarified that it did not, highlighting a significant misunderstanding in the agreement.
