Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently shared a strong message with the American public, signaling the Trump administration’s cautious approach toward Cuba and other international conflicts. President Donald Trump’s energy sanctions on Cuba are intended to pressure the communist government, which faces severe economic strain. The measures have worsened shortages of food, water, and medicine, impacting the island’s 10 million residents. Sebastián Arcos, interim director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University, warned that repression is increasing as the government struggles to survive, calling Cuba’s leaders “really, really bad guys” who may not endure this crisis.
Trump suggested that the U.S. could pursue a “friendly takeover” similar to strategies used in Venezuela, keeping the regime in place while pushing for economic reforms. Rubio, who is reportedly leading U.S. strategy, has met with Raúl Castro’s grandson, Raúl Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, who oversees GAESA, the conglomerate managing Cuba’s armed forces and much of its economy, reportedly holding $18 billion in assets. Rubio emphasized that Cuba “needs to change” but not immediately, signaling a gradual approach to reform.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has launched a joint military campaign with Israel against Iran. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Rubio briefed members of the “Gang of Eight” in Congress ahead of the operation, addressing concerns about presidential authority to conduct strikes without full congressional approval. The debate over war powers continues, with lawmakers such as Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna proposing measures to restrict Trump’s ability to act unilaterally.
In addition, Rubio announced Iran’s designation as a state sponsor of wrongful detention, highlighting executive and legislative actions to protect U.S. nationals abroad. Further measures, including potential travel restrictions for U.S. passports to Iran, could follow if Iran does not comply.
