Ashley Biden, the daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years, Dr. Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon, in Pennsylvania.
The 44-year-old submitted divorce documents to Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas on Monday. Biden and Krein married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced by Ashley’s late brother Beau in 2010.

Pennsylvania law automatically seals divorce filings, which means the reasons for the separation will remain confidential. The couple maintained a largely private family life throughout their 13-year marriage, keeping details away from public scrutiny.
Court records in the state remain sealed, making it unlikely that additional details about the separation will become public.

During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley spoke about her wedding while introducing her father to the audience. “At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she said.
On the day the filing became official, Ashley posted a photograph on Instagram showing herself in a wooded setting with a thumbs-up gesture, set to Beyoncé’s song “Freedom.” She wrote in the caption, “New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”
