Obama Goes After Trump Again After Key Elections Called

Former President Barack Obama praised opposition victories in Hungary’s recent elections, drawing swift criticism from President Donald Trump over past Iran policy disagreements.

Obama posted on X that the Hungarian opposition’s electoral success represented “a victory for democracy, not just in Europe but around the world.” The remarks came after Viktor Orbán, who governed Hungary for 16 years, faced electoral challenges from opposition forces.

The Statement

“Most of all, it’s a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people – and a reminder to all of us to keep striving for fairness, equality and the rule of law,” Obama wrote on the social media platform. His message highlighted the election outcome as significant for democratic institutions globally.

Obama has intensified his political activity in recent months, taking positions on redistricting efforts in multiple states and making public statements on various policy matters. The former president has also engaged in ongoing disputes with Trump and his political movement across several issues.

Trump’s Counterattack

Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth responded by targeting Obama’s Iran nuclear deal from his administration. Trump stated that Obama had paid Iran approximately $1.7 billion, which the president described as cash transported on Boeing 757 aircraft with seats removed.

“That Barack Hussein Obama, did you ever hear of him? He had the Iran nuclear deal. He went to Iran, he paid them,” Trump said, referencing the payment that Obama officials said resolved a decades-old legal claim dating to 1979. Trump terminated the Iran nuclear deal during his first term, contending that Iran violated its terms while developing nuclear capabilities in secret.

The Iran Policy Dispute

Obama’s administration had justified the $1.7 billion payment as settlement of a legal dispute stemming from a failed 1979 arms deal before the Iranian Revolution. Trump argued that terminating the nuclear agreement prevented Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons that could have threatened the Middle East and Israel.

The United States and Israel are currently engaged in military operations aimed at degrading Iran’s military infrastructure, according to Trump’s statements about the operation’s objectives. Trump characterized the presidency as “a very powerful thing” when discussing the ability to transfer large sums of money to foreign nations.
