A 69-year-old San Diego homeowner whose house displays prominent pro-Trump decorations was left in critical condition after a severe beating on Wednesday afternoon.
Officers responded to an assault in progress near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street around midday. Emergency responders found the victim suffering serious injuries, while a utility worker who witnessed the attack held the suspect until police arrived.
Critical Condition and Hospital Status
The victim’s wife, Maria Garcia, told CBS 8 that her husband’s condition remains dire following the assault. “He tried to kill my husband, you know,” Garcia said. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.”
The victim is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained during the attack. Medical teams continue to monitor his condition in the intensive care unit.
Suspect Apprehended
The suspect, identified as Butler, fled the scene but was quickly located and taken into custody by police. He is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County.
According to a friend who spoke with the California Post, Butler is a Navy veteran who has experienced significant mental health struggles in recent months. The acquaintance described Butler as increasingly paranoid during that period.
The ‘Trump House’ and Prior Incidents
The residence, widely known throughout San Diego as the “Trump House,” has displayed American flags, patriotic symbols, and pro-Trump messaging for years. The property has faced prior vandalism and neighbor complaints related to its prominent political decorations.
Garcia suggested that the visible political displays on the home may have motivated the attack. Police have not publicly announced an official motive for the assault.
Political Response
California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa responded on social media, calling for action and writing, “Full and immediate investigation.” Issa stated that supporters of President Trump face “routinely the victims of leftist violence all across the country.”
Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether political motivations played a role in the alleged attempted killing. The utility worker’s quick actions likely prevented further injury to the victim.
